“And She Was” (Talking Heads Cover)

By Jeff:

Site Curator notice: Amazing look back at the description and video here.  Still fun to read back at these things over 4 years later.  I actually use this album as “detention music” when students are silly enough to receive detention from me.

And now after yet another possible power outage (just some flickering lights today, despite the 30 minute long tornado warning), I get to bring you my “originally intended for Thumpin’ Thursday video”, which we’ll call “It sucks when the *#%@in power goes out Friday”.

And for ISWTFPGOF (which I will NOT be typing again – either in abbreviated or standard form), I bring you a new band for the site.  It’s amazing that we haven’t thought to do a song by this awesome band – The Talking Heads.  One of my favorite bands from the 80s (aka my childhood of watching MTV videos), I bring you a song from their album “Little Creatures” called “And She Was”.

I think David Byrne is another person that I can sing similar too.  This is an awesome song that goes along with some of their other more well-known hits (which I am considering doing for next week as well).  While a bit on the short side (for one of my videos), it is a fun song to play and sing.

The summer time has afforded me a bit of free time, but that will still be hard to find all summer.  I have two weeks of training in July, a week vacation in mid-August, and in general a summer of preparation.  For many things.

I hope you enjoy tonight’s video – even if it’s a day late.  Seeya in 6 days!

“Don’t Cry No Tears” (Neil Young Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

Happy Saturday to everyone out there on the internet! It’s Jeff Copperthite bringing you the latest installment of The Laptop Sessions. I bring you a new artist for me, but not a new artist for the sessions.

That of course would be a classic one at that – Neil Young, and the first track off of his album “Zuma” called “Don’t Cry No Tears”. It’s a short and sweet song that I was able to technically record in one take. I had meant to record it earlier in the day, but battery problems with my camera (read: camera turning off in the middle of a take) caused me to postpone recording it until about 10 minutes ago. Thankfully I have practiced this one all week.

I decided to record this song after hearing a Wallflowers cover of this song, and you will hear another song in 6 days because of the same reason. It will also be a new artist to the sessions, unless Jim or Chris randomly decide to cover the same artist, or the same song! I’ll leave that to chance, and let you wonder who it could possibly be.

In the meantime, enjoy this classic from Neil Young. Come back in a little while to hear Jim’s newest session!

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, Jeff’s acoustic cover song music videos are no longer on YouTube, but we decided to keep his cover song blog posts up.  We figured these music blog entries would be good for posterity’s sake and because Jeff always gave such insightful posts each Session.  We hope to see Jeff’s impressive catalog of acoustic rock songs here on the Laptop Sessions cover songs and original music blog again in the future.  But, for now, please make sure to check-out hundreds of other acoustic cover songs from all of your favorite bands here on the Laptop Sessions music blog!

“Pulling Teeth” (Green Day Cover)

By Jeff:

Welcome to the most unusual Thumpin’ Thursday ever!  Unusual because for the first time in what seems like a long time, i’m doing my post while the sun is still out.

I’ll skip a few lines so you can grasp the significance of this occasion.

That’s right – tonight is the prom i’ve been helping plan for quite some time.  I have to leave in about an hour to be the first person to show up and pay the people.  But it’s going to be a lot of fun, and I can only hope that everyone from our school attends, has fun, eats a lot of good food, and has a memorable evening.

Now, with that said, onto TODAY‘s session (had to do that – it’s monumental to even me).

Today I had a few songs in mind, and had a song ready to go when I got home, but on my short drive today’s song came on my IPod, and I said “Got to remember to look at the name”.  It was this song (oh don’t get me wrong – I knew the band immediately).  I pulled into my garage just as the song came to an end, looked at it, and said this would make a great session choice.

And not just because the song is just over 2 minutes long.

Okay, maybe that contributed a bit, but the other song would’ve only lasted another minute.

The song is “Pulling Teeth” by Green Day from their album “Dookie”.  I think this album is one of the standout albums of the alternative era.  Even if some of the songs were on the simple side, it is a defining album.  This song is different than most of the songs, in that the beat is consistent and not really ultra fast or pressing.  I also find it funny that the lyrics are about a guy being on the receiving end of domestic abuse.

I wanted to say to all of my fans – everything is WONDERFUL.

But i’m really excited to get this evening over.  This has dominated my job for the past month especially, and tomorrow morning I will be especially happy.  This will make doing graduation a cakewalk.

Until then, enjoy today’s session, and i’ll be back next week for another one!

“No Rain” (Blind Melon Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

That’s right…it’s that time of the 3 week rotation…Jeff presents Thumpin’ Thursday ™®©!!!!

And I shall now cover a song that will have Jim saying “Damnit you had to get this song stuck in my head for the next 3 months!”.

The band, although a short-lived one (but with some success), is Blind Melon, and their very popular song “No Rain” from their self-titled debut album.  It is very, very easy to have this song embedded in your humming repertoire for quite some time.  The chorus is addicting, simple, and very catchy – the perfect candidate for Thumpin’ Thursday.

I’ve continued to cover some of the old school alternative music from my teenage years.  I may have to start breaking out some of the real obscure alternative music I listened too growing up – not to mention the classic rock, folk rock, etc. songs I have lined up for the rest of the year.

That was an awesome Original Wednesday post that I am following.  If you haven’t seen it yet, do your eyes and ears a service and check it out.  I can’t wait to hear Chris and Jim’s upcoming albums.  They will both be on the same playlist for quite some time once both are recorded and released.

Tomorrow Jim will dish out the awesome with another acoustic cover.  And in case you thought we were counting, there are 48 videos to go in 2008.  We’re almost there!
