“Tangled Up in Blue” (Bob Dylan Cover)

I’ve recorded a series of Bob Dylan songs for the Laptop Sessions, and yet I haven’t recorded any songs from one of his best albums, Blood on the Tracks. From the moment I heard “Tangled Up in Blue,” I’ve always loved this song. I think it’s the story and how — even though it’s a classic structure of verse, bridge, chorus (repeat seven times) — the story shifts after every chorus. My favorite alternate version of this song is from his 1984 live album Real Live. I was caught off guard by this version, as Dylan changes a good portion of the lyrics and shifts the perspective of the narrator.

When Jim and I went to see Dylan a couple years ago in the rain in an open field (which was a less than pleasant way to spend $60!), the highlight of the show was probably when one of the band members broke out an acoustic guitar and Dylan sang a rockin’ “Tangled Up in Blue.” We were still soaked, but it helped make up for it…

“Days of Wonder” (Wallflowers Cover)

I’m going for the hat trick on Wallflowers songs, and doing the album opener from “Rebel, Sweetheart” called “Days of Wonder”. It is a terrific opening song full of cheer, reflection, the usual writing of Jakob Dylan.

This song has a driving beat that is difficult to reproduce on the acoustic guitar, and I have only learned how to play this song for 24 hours now. Still, this version is nice and cool. I hope you enjoy it.

This also represents my first non-quick capture attempt at these videos. All i’ve figured out so far is how to cut off the “hitting the stop button” part at the end, and I got text at the beginning. As far as the song is concerned, I like how it turned out, but from now on i’ll try to increase the lighting in the room – especially when filming at night.

“Looking for the Next Best Thing” (Warren Zevon Cover)

This is a great Warren Zevon song and I really wish I could have included the solo in the middle! Still, I had a lot of fun learning it and am proud to include a Zevon song in my repertoire. As I’ve seen Jim and Jeff build their list of bands/artists that they’ve covered, I’ve definitely begun writing my own list in my head, and this artist is a big check. I’ll definitely be playing more from him, if I could only decide which song I want to play next. Probably “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner”…

I think this is an under-appreciated song from the post-“One Headlight” album Breach. This was a lot of fun to finally learn and play. From the moment Jim mentioned the idea for these laptop sessions, I thought this would be a great one to pull out. And I feel that I’ve waited long enough after Jeff’s last Wallflowers post to finally put this one up here.
