“Eleanor Rigby” (Beatles Cover)

Acoustic cover of “Eleanor Rigby” from the Revolver album (1966).  I didn’t have any orchestra, so I find my way to play this song with my acoustic guitar only.

Go ahead and check out this stellar solo version of the Beatles classic “Eleanor Rigby.”  I, for one, wish I could fingerpick and sing at the same time like Federico can — I would have gotten a lot less comments on my “Just Breathe” (Pearl Jam) video, I can tell you that much!

The Laptop Sessions all began with Jim’s first Beatles cover song music video of “Here, There, and Everywhere,” and it’s always exciting to be able to induct a new, interesting cover into the Beatles category.  Thanks, Federico, for another great contribution to the Guest Sessions!

I recently had to take my acoustic/electric into the shop to get it looked at, since the “electric” half of it wasn’t working, and a Made in the U.S.A. Fender Strat was hanging on the wall.  I couldn’t resist.  I took it home (yes, I paid for it first).  It feels great and has great tone and sustain, even out of my tiny little amp. So here’s “Bathtub Gin” by Phish.  I laid down the rhythm and vocals first (single take), and then laid the solo over that track. This is a fun tune and I love the solo melody, particularly when played on my new ax.

[Editor’s Note: We’re happy to welcome Jeremy Hammond back for another featured performance on the Guest Sessions.  He’s another one we bend the rules for a bit — there’s a solo overdubbed — but this is hardly bending, since the main performance (electric and vocals) was recorded live, at the same time.  “Bathtub Gin” is a great song; lyrically, it sounds Dylan-esque, which is more than fine with us!  🙂  The guitar work is perfect, and the solo is spot-on.  So, go ahead and enjoy this cool cover song music video by Jeremy and hurry back next week for the season finale!]

“Jorge Maravilha” (Chico Buarque cover) [Ep 7, Fall 2011]

This is a song from a notorious Brazilian writer/singer Chico Buarque.  Some say its lyrics are addressed to the former Brazilian dictator’s daughter (1974).

The catchy phrase says:

“You don´t like me, but your daughter does.”

[Editor’s Note: Here’s a serious first-time for the Laptop Sessions: an acoustic cover song music video performed in a language other than English!  It was only a matter of time before the LS blog went bilingual.  For years now, we have featured videos from artists in countries outside America, taking advantage of one of the wonderful uniting properties of the internet.  Rodrigo has contributed to the Guest Sessions before, but there is even more energy in this song than his previous work.  It’s our pleasure to bring it to you, and even if you don’t know all the words (I know I don’t), I’m certain that you’ll enjoy the performance and that catchy chorus line.  I know I did.]
