“Mexican Hat Dance” (Traditional cover)

By Jeremy Hammond:

I was just playing around and worked out a fun little arrangement for this traditional song that everyone will recognize.

** EDITOR’S NOTE: **

I couldn’t resist picking this as our Guest Sessions featured video of the week.  It’s a fun little song, and a fun little performance by one of our favorite contributors to the site.

We may know this popularly as the “Mexican Hat Dance,” but it is more formally known as “Jarabe tapatio.”  It was first compiled in Guadalajaran music professor Jesus Gonzalez Rubio as a medley of Mexican folk music.  It has since been honored by many as the national dance of Mexico.

This is your Guest Session electric cover song instrumental video.  We hope you’ll enjoy it!

“Yes” (Coldplay Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

Welcome to your Thumpin’ Thursday installment of The Laptop Sessions (and almost fantastic Friday as well)!

I hope all is well on your end, and that you are celebrating with your family and friends one of the two major religious holidays that are going on at this point in time.  I myself have been to two Seders in the past two nights, and i’m done until next year with those.

Tonight I have a great cover song, and to boot, it’s a 2 parter!

The song is “Yes” by Coldplay, and yes it’s another song from their incredibly popular album “Viva La Vida”.  I was so excited that when I picked this album up last year, I didn’t even look at the track list.  I put it in my CD player and heard each song on the album before I even knew the name of it.  This song and the 2nd one were my favorite.  I just liked how it tied together and it’s gentle and “pleading” beat (I couldn’t think of another word to describe it).

I find myself enjoying Coldplay’s library more and more.  They do a great job putting music together.

Speaking of people who do a good job putting music together, have you picked up Jim Fusco’s new album Halfway There yet?  I’ve only heard previews of some of the songs, and if that is any kind of indication as to the quality of this album, you best hear it and purchase it yourself.  I also am looking forward to hearing his remastered version of “What About Today?”, which is an awesome album as well.  Jim’s music always pleases.

In the meantime, enjoy this song!

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, Jeff’s acoustic cover song music videos are no longer on YouTube, but we decided to keep his cover song blog posts up.  We figured these music blog entries would be good for posterity’s sake and because Jeff always gave such insightful posts each Session.  We hope to see Jeff’s impressive catalog of acoustic rock songs here on the Laptop Sessions cover songs and origianal music blog again in the future.  But, for now, please make sure to check-out hundreds of other acoustic cover songs from all of your favorite bands here on the Laptop Sessions music blog!

“I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)” (Bob Dylan electric cover) [Ep 2, Fall 2011]

By Federico Borluzzi:

A cover of Bob Dylan’s ”I Don’t Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)” from his Another Side Of Bob Dylan LP (1964). Played with electric guitar and harmonica in the key of D.

[Editor’s Note: It is my great pleasure to add this electric cover song music video to the blog from our friend Federico.  It has been a great while since our previous season of Guest Sessions aired, but clearly Federico hasn’t slacked off in his devotion to the guitar, harmonica, or singing in the meantime.  This is, without a doubt, the best Dylan cover I’ve heard from him, and in all honesty, I’m downright jealous of his note-perfect performance.  So, without further ado, I leave you to watch his music video, and I doubt you’ll only watch it once.]

“Bathtub Gin” (Phish Cover)

By Jeremy Hammond:

I recently had to take my acoustic/electric into the shop to get it looked at, since the “electric” half of it wasn’t working, and a Made in the U.S.A. Fender Strat was hanging on the wall.  I couldn’t resist.  I took it home (yes, I paid for it first).  It feels great and has great tone and sustain, even out of my tiny little amp.  So here’s “Bathtub Gin” by Phish.  I laid down the rhythm and vocals first (single take), and then laid the solo over that track.  This is a fun tune and I love the solo melody, particularly when played on my new ax.

** EDITOR’S NOTE: **

Our favorite perennial format bending, Phish-covering Guest Sessions contributor is back, and this time, he’s brought a new guitar purchase to his cover song music video.  We hope that your Friday may be a little brighter for this great, groovy rendition of a Phish deep track, originally recorded for their 1990 album Lawn Boy.
