“Love Stinks” (J. Geils Band Cover)

I get to kick off a specialty week here on guitarbucketlist.com.  If Jim & Chris haven’t hyped it up enough, it’s New Bands Week version 2.0 starting tonight!

Our first new band is, to be honest, a band I don’t know all that much about.  Matter of fact, I didn’t even know this song was by this band until it was played on The Complaining Show on WCJM way back when.  It was also featured prominently in the movie “The Wedding Singer” before Adam Sandler had his lights punched out.

I think I don’t match the voice of John (not Jerome) Geils that well, but the acoustic cover is an interesting one for sure.

Hey, it was either this or “Freeze Frame”.

This is probably among the more interesting songs I have covered.  Hopefully the rest of the year my song selection will start to make sense much more often.

The next day Jim brought another new band to the table — I couldn’t wait to see who it was!

“Good” (Better Than Ezra Cover)

Good evening, and welcome toThumpin’ Thursday!  I’ve got a brand new band to bring to the blog tonight!

The band is somewhat well-known, called “Better Than Ezra”.  They released an album that I have somewhere in my library called “Deluxe”.  On it was a song called “Good”, which is tonight’s cover.  It’s a very cool song that I actually never really understood the meaning of.

You know how there are songs that you really don’t “listen” to the lyrics?  This is one of them.  I mean, don’t get me wrong.  I’ve long knew the words, but I never really bothered to figure out what the song means.  It wasn’t until I was reviewing the lyrics for the session that I realized it’s a “damn she left and wrote a note about it”.

This song is still a solid one from what I call “My Alternative Library”.  It was drawn from throughout the year — plenty to look forward to.

I’m watching a really cool special right now on TV.  Apparently George Carlin has been posthumously awarded the “Mark Twain” award.  It’s a commercial free 90 minute special where multiple comedians are paying tribute and they are showing various clips from his television career – all the way from his very early Tonight Show appearances, Smothers Brothers set, HBO specials, and other things I haven’t seen.  It was on a channel called WLIW21, so if you get it (or have heard of it before), you will have to watch it.

George has always been a favorite of mine.  Sorry for the diversion from tonight’s session.  I hoped you’d enjoy it — the next Thursday session was the first cover of a great song!

“Better Man” (Pearl Jam Cover)

Good evening to you all! It’s Jeff Copperthite returning for another Saturday night fever edition of The Laptop Sessions! I’m back to school this week, and i’m sure if you are a student, or have children who are students, I feel your pain. Except mine is the “I have to get back into teaching mode” pain.

However, session-a-day must go on! We are nearing September, which means 2/3 of the year is nearly complete since we started this project. And not a day goes by that Jim, Chris, and myself mutter under our breath “What was Chris thinking?”.

But it will all be worth it – it already all is. That’s because you’re reading this, and have enjoyed nearly 200 videos from the four of us. I also want to thank Mike for jumping in with an awesome original song on Wednesday. Given that I haven’t been doing much writing lately, and Mike had expressed a lot of interest in doing an original, it was the natural thing to do.

Today’s song is one from Pearl Jam – a band that we have seen before on the sessions. I am covering another song from their album “Vitalogy” called “Better Man”. It starts out soft and gets much stronger and emphasized in the last part. This song received (and still does receive) much airplay on the radio.

I don’t feel this is my strongest performance, but it works much better than I thought it did while recording. Note to future artists – never eat a pack of Nutter Butters before recording a video. You’ll have to cancel it out with 1/2 a Gatorade and a Vitamin Water (“Water sucks – Gatorade is better”, to quote the Waterboy).

Anyway, enjoy this entry — the Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! edition featured Jimnelious…er, Jim Fusco!

“Mama Said” (Metallica Cover)

Yep, welcome to Thumpin’ Thursday, which is a day where many firsts happen. This week it’s a first from a band you wouldn’t think makes music that would be fitting for an acoustic cover.

Well, even they have to record an acoustic one here and there.

However, I refuse to stoop to their commercially successful song “Nothing Else Matters” partly because I don’t think it’s as good of an acoustic song as the one today, but also because I’m really focusing on covering the tunes that I enjoy the most.

So with that said, here’s a 12 year old song called “Mama Said” from their 1996 album “Load”. This album was received to mixed reviews for multiple reasons. Firstly, the music tended to lean more towards the alternative movement that was still exploding in the mid-90s. Secondly, the album was a style change from the traditional “everything in E-minor” key that was common in their previous albums. Thirdly, they all cut their hair and posed in some weird outfits for the album photo shoot. While the third one doesn’t have anything to do with the music, the die hard fans enjoyed watching them sway their hair around stage as they pumped out their music.

This song is one of James Hetfield’s recurring themes when he write lyrics – his mother. While I can’t recall every one of their songs that deals with this, it is quite numerous. The tune is a bit of a sad one if you pay attention to the lyrics.

I also continue to focus on getting the sound to work out on the condenser mic on my camera. I just don’t have the time to invest on anything better for recording the videos. I’ll have to work with what I have. Currently i’m focusing on aiming the sound hole from the guitar at the microphone to amplify the quality of the guitar. However, in this video it does seem to be a bit much. If you have suggestions, i’ll be happy to entertain them (short of buying new equipment).
