“Tryin’ To Get To Heaven” (Bob Dylan Cover)

Welcome to another Laptop Session! I had such a good time recording “Love Sick” for my last post, that I decided to do another song from Bob Dylan’s Time Out of Mind. Ironically, shortly after the album came out, Dylan had a near-death experience after he contracted an infection of some sort. And, oh yes, the headlines followed quickly. “Dylan ‘Tryin’ to Get to Heaven’?” and so forth. They were predictably cheesy, but I suppose the journalists found them irresistible…

Speaking of headlines, it sounds like Jeff and Jim are going to be making headlines soon with Jeff’s new EP and Jim’s album Halfway There. I haven’t written any songs since the summer, and even though I have three other projects I’m finishing off, chipping away at, and envisioning (respectively), I’m going to be very jealous of these projects! In a good way, too — that’s how we writers work, I suppose. Anyway, I wish both of my Laptop Session colleagues the best and offer my services. Jeff: If you need an electrifying guitar solo… definitely go to Jim, that’s definitely out of my league. And Jim: If you need another drummer to mix things up… you can just give Jeff a call, since I’m still on page one of my “Drumming for Idiots” guide. lol Seriously, I’m looking forward to both projects.

“One Headlight” (Wallflowers Cover)

Okay, so I have good news and bad news. Good news — MoU has finally released their highly anticipated second album, Homestead’s Revenge. It’s really the next step up from the more “live-in-the-studio” sound of our debut. And the songwriting includes all members. Not only do Jim, Mike, Cliff and I have our own songs, but we co-wrote three as a full band! I hope you’ll listen to album and purchase it at http://jimfusco.com/albums.html !

Now, for the bad news… While it’s been a lot of fun to record these Laptop Sessions, I’m afraid I’ve become far too busy to keep fitting them in. So, today I bring you my final, my farewell Laptop Session…

This Wallflowers song, “One Headlight,” is the first song I ever truly loved. I was in 7th grade, and whenever my dad and I were in the car and heard this song, we would crank the volume. This is saying something, because music wasn’t all that important to me back then. I never did buy the album, as the Sam Goody’s store in my local mall only had a copy with a cracked case. I couldn’t bring myself to spend what was then a lot of money for me on a less than perfect product. Ironically, I would go on to listen to songwriter Jakob Dylan’s father (yes, Bob Dylan!) and he would become my absolute favorite artist.

When I eventually did buy the Bringing Down the Horse album, I fell in love with not only this song, but the band. And I recently recorded “Sixth Avenue Heartache,” another BDTH alum, for a previous Laptop Session.

All right, I can’t go on with the lie — April Fool’s! This is far from my final Laptop Session, as Jim, Jeff, and I continue to record a new session-a-day for all of 2008. That’s right, all 366 days! I hope you’ll come back to https://guitarbucketlist.com tomorrow for a new session from Jeff!

“Big Empty” (STP Cover)

And returning after a long absence…me!

And finally, a song from a band I’ve liked since I first heard their single “Plush” on the radio – Stone Temple Pilots.

There are a lot of songs from them I’d like to do for The Laptop Sessions, and among that long list is this classic from their album “Purple”.

This is also the first video I’ve done since acquiring a Canon Powershot digital camera, which considerably improves the video quality from one of the possibly worst uses of $20 (other than having someone light you on fire – never quite understood that one).

I hope you enjoy this. Also, I’ll take this time to comment – I’VE BEEN COMPARED TO BRIAN WILSON!

Well, indirectly, but it was on YouTube, so that counts in my mind!

“The Man in Me” (Bob Dylan Cover)

I’ve been on a 70’s Dylan kick recently, and I thought I’d present to you one of my favorite overlooked Dylan songs of the decade. “The Man in Me” is from what was initially my least favorite album from his catalog, 1970’s New Morning. I listened to this album around the same time I was listening to Desire, so there really isn’t a comparison to be made, and I wrote off most of the songs on the album. When I went back to it years later, I found some really great songs, such as this one.

It may not be “Like A Rolling Stone” or a song of that caliber, but I hope you’ll take it for what it is — a really sincere, fun Dylan love song. I hope you enjoy it!
