“Breaking The Girl” (Red Hot Chili Peppers Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

Welcome to ANOTHER NEW BAND here on the Sessions!  It’s time for a band we have wrongfully neglected on the site, and among the greatest Alternative rock acts of all time.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers!

From their awesome album “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” is their 2nd single “Breaking The Girl”, which is a fun tune to belt out on the acoustic.  The guitar part is very well orchestrated and brings out the emotion of the song.

I am using a capo for this song, but Chili Pepper purists will be the first to tell me that it’s not supposed to be played with a capo.  Well, it CAN be played with a capo, and I did.  So there.

We got to go to Fusco Moore Studios for the recording of the 10th anniversery show — you know i was all over that.

And the next day, Jim came out of post-production hiding to give us another great acoustic cover!

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, Jeff’s acoustic cover song music videos are no longer on YouTube, but we decided to keep his cover song blog posts up.  We figured these music blog entries would be good for posterity’s sake and because Jeff always gave such insightful posts each Session.  We hope to see Jeff’s impressive catalog of acoustic rock songs here on the Laptop Sessions cover songs and origianal music blog again in the future.  But, for now, please make sure to check-out hundreds of other acoustic cover songs from all of your favorite bands here on the Laptop Sessions music blog!

“Extra Pale” (Goo Goo Dolls Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

This is the second time thsi year that i’ve been unable to post because of health reasons.  Earlier in the year (near the start of this project) I had food poisoning that put me out of my scheduled day, and last week I felt a cold coming on.  I got around that by posting an instrumental (that a lot of people liked, which was good), but on Thursday, I could barely talk.  How I taught this past week is beyond me.  Even today my voice is not 100%.

But the posts must go on.  And therefore, i’m making up for lost time by posting 4/7 of the days of this week!

And yes, I used a fraction.

Today I’ve got an obscure album cut from The Goo Goo Dolls’ album “Dizzy Up The Girl”, which is called “Extra Pale”.  One thing i’ve always been amazed by is that every single this band has released has had their guitarist Johnny Rzeznik singing the song.  The people who do not own any GGD albums will think Johnny is lead singer/guitarist.  However, the bassist Robby also sings on many of the tracks and writes or co-writes as well.  This is one of those songs.  Robby’s songs are also shorter than most of the other songs.  This may be the shortest video i’ve ever done!

I tried my best to sing this song, but as you will hear my voice is not 100%.  I decided to throw in that caution in the beginning because I would worry people think I sound like that all the time!  It works for this song because it’s a naturally lower register.

Enjoy this tune, and thank you for coming out consistently to check out every video every day!

The next day’s session brought another new band!

The TOP TWENTY ALBUMS of 2011 (The Year-End Awards)

By Chris Moore:

It is the best and truest mark of artistry in the music industry, and sales are no indication of significance. Sequencing and thematic continuity, sonic experimentation within a basic set of familiar parameters, a healthy range of types and topics: these are the standards by which to judge an album.

The album.

It ascended into an art form in the mid-sixties under the careful work of artists like the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and the Beach Boys. It was taken to new heights with the experimentation of later bands, from the concept albums of the Moody Blues to the spin-off success of artists like Bruce Springsteen. The album – and rock in general – saw a rebirth in the nineties, with the work of those like Weezer, the Wallflowers, the Barenaked Ladies, and a slew of others who led a surge of excellent rock music.

These days, the album has faced a crossroads. Specifically, with the advent and surge of digital sales, the physical formats of music are on the chopping block. Still, with the rise of vinyl sales even as CD sales continue to decline, there is hope yet. And, contrary to an army of naysayers, there are still excellent albums being made. This year, as with the past several years that I have been tuned into a vast array of albums, I would say there are about five albums that will undoubtedly stand the test of time and compete for top spots when I eventually get around to my Best Albums of All Time list. Which, at this point, might have to wait until I hit retirement.

But, for the moment, you have my Best Albums of 2011 list, and if you’re interested in reading more about any of these albums, you can access my Weekend Review report (including star rating, production info, and a full review) by simply searching the album title and band name in the search bar above. And, of course, if you see reason for disagreement or any gaps in my list, it’s up to you to leave comments below.

2) The King is Dead (The Decemberists)

3) Last Night on Earth (Noah & the Whale)

4) Wasting Light (Foo Fighters)

5) Bad As Me (Tom Waits)

6) Unfortunate Casino (Gerry Beckley)

11) The Graduation Ceremony (Joseph Arthur)

12) Vol. 2: High and Inside (The Baseball Project)

13) Collapse Into Now (R.E.M.)

“No Rain” (Blind Melon Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

That’s right…it’s that time of the 3 week rotation…Jeff presents Thumpin’ Thursday ™®©!!!!

And I shall now cover a song that will have Jim saying “Damnit you had to get this song stuck in my head for the next 3 months!”.

The band, although a short-lived one (but with some success), is Blind Melon, and their very popular song “No Rain” from their self-titled debut album. It is very, very easy to have this song embedded in your humming repertoire for quite some time. The chorus is addicting, simple, and very catchy – the perfect candidate for Thumpin’ Thursday.

I’ve continued to cover some of the old school alternative music from my teenage years. I may have to start breaking out some of the real obscure alternative music I listened too growing up – not to mention the classic rock, folk rock, etc. songs I have lined up for the rest of the year.

That was an awesome Original Wednesday post that I am following. If you haven’t seen it yet, do your eyes and ears a service and check it out. I can’t wait to hear Chris and Jim’s upcoming albums. They will both be on the same playlist for quite some time once both are recorded and released.

The next day’s post saw Jim dish out the awesome with another acoustic cover. And in case you thought we were counting, there were 48 videos to go in 2008. We were almost there!
