“Things Have Changed” (Bob Dylan Cover)

I love doing covers this day of the week.  Why?

Because it’s Thumpin’ Thursday™! (Jim needs to learn how to insert special characters in the editor by the way)

And I always keep the solid beat songs in reserve for this day.  Make you want to tap your feet if I can.

Well, I decided today to break out a really cool (and relatively recent) Bob Dylan song called “Things Have Changed”.  The song itself is from a Soundtrack from the movie Wonder Boys.  Originally, I thought it was released on a different album (Love & Theft, if you were wondering), but alas it was not to be.

I heard this song thanks to the Bob Dylan master Chris Moore.  He also helped figure out that the song I had stuck in my head a few days back was this song.  So if it weren’t for him, i’d have something else up here today.

I love the beat of this song, but as with all Dylan songs, he sometimes fits a lot of words into the same measure, or a few words.  It can be tough to stay on top of that, and in this video you’ll notice me forgetting to change the chord for a beat.  It happens to the best of us I guess.

And I managed to sing similarly to Dylan as well.  The video works very nicely.

As with all Thumpin’ Thursday™ entries, I know you’ll enjoy this one.  I’ll see you in 3 days for my next video!

“Echo” (Tom Petty Cover)

Welcome back to another edition of the Laptop Sessions!

One of my favorite Tom Petty albums is the little-known 1999 album Echo. I found it used in an FYE about a year ago, and although it may not be his best album ever, it immediately grew on me. There are some really great tracks on it (out of 15 tracks, you’d hope so!), including the title track that I’m playing here. It took me a bit of practice to be comfortable playing this song without a cheat sheet in front of me — certainly not for the chords, but for the words, which change every chorus. In the end, it was a lot of fun, and I’ve been playing it pretty much every day since I recorded it.

Some day, I might get up the “balls” (as Tom Petty might sing) to play “Rhino Skin,” one of the best tracks on the album. Take a listen to it some time, and maybe you’ll see why I’m not quite there yet… 🙂

“Mourning Train” (The Wallflowers Cover)

I’m back after a short hiatus!  Welcome to your special Friday edition of The Laptop Sessions.

Tonight’s song is the first Wallflowers cover in a long time.  I have selected another song from their 2nd album “Breach”, and I plan on closing out my 2008 run w/ the Sessions with another song from this album (I did mention it in an earlier post which song it is going to be)

As you know by now, I am a huge Wallflowers fan.  I enjoy all their albums and they are so easy to listen to at any time of the day.  My wife enjoys this band as well.  This cover is still a first for me though.  Up until now, i’ve covered their upbeat songs, and this is the first that is among their slower, gentler tunes.  It allows me to really sit back and play a nice, neat song with the cool writing of Jakob Dylan.

And yes, that is Bob Dylan’s son (in case you didn’t know).

We need not go into further detail, but know that we are committed to bringing you the best cover songs!  Jim, Chris, and I will continue our dedication not just through this year, but into the next.  We can’t wait to announce to you when you can look forward to more cover songs from the three of us!

“Tangled Up in Blue” (Bob Dylan Cover)

I’ve recorded a series of Bob Dylan songs for the Laptop Sessions, and yet I haven’t recorded any songs from one of his best albums, Blood on the Tracks. From the moment I heard “Tangled Up in Blue,” I’ve always loved this song. I think it’s the story and how — even though it’s a classic structure of verse, bridge, chorus (repeat seven times) — the story shifts after every chorus. My favorite alternate version of this song is from his 1984 live album Real Live. I was caught off guard by this version, as Dylan changes a good portion of the lyrics and shifts the perspective of the narrator.

When Jim and I went to see Dylan a couple years ago in the rain in an open field (which was a less than pleasant way to spend $60!), the highlight of the show was probably when one of the band members broke out an acoustic guitar and Dylan sang a rockin’ “Tangled Up in Blue.” We were still soaked, but it helped make up for it…
