“Tonight I’ll Be Stayin’ Here With You” (Bob Dylan Covers – Triple Threat Tuesday!!)

By Chris Moore:

Hello and welcome to not only another Laptop Session music video, but also a special treat from the three songwriters who bring you an acoustic cover a day EVERY day in 2008…

This is a little something we like to call Triple Threat Tuesday. What this means is today you will receive not one, not two, not four, but THREE video blog entries. Each video will be a cover version of Bob Dylan’s 1969 song “Tonight I’ll Be Stayin’ Here With You.” It’s such a great track that we couldn’t agree on just one person to record an acoustic cover of it… so all three of us will take a stab at it! This song originally appeared on the first fully country-rock Dylan album, appropriately titled Nashville Skyline. This album is filled with very simple, upbeat, and brief (under 3 minutes each) songs, not to mention they’re all sung in his “Lay, Lady, Lay” voice and Johnny Cash himself makes a special guest appearance on the opening track. I’ve heard better duets, but there are few things better than hearing two giants like Cash and Dylan harmonize (however loosely) on such a great song as “Girl from the North Country.” Dylan actually originally released that song on his 1962 acoustic album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.

Personally, my favorite version of this song is Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue version, recorded in 1975 and released in the Bootleg series. He changes the words around and, although they’re a bit more blunt than the original, I love them and think they work well for this acoustic cover rendition. But that’s the beauty of cover songs — they give songwriters like us endless opportunities to perfect our own skills and to end some of our own style to the track. For instance, I can bet that Jim’s version will be faithful to the original, as he loves that album. He could have bet money that I would go for the obscure live lyrics, since I love Bob Dylan and have probably heard more live versions of this song than the average person should.

As Jim explained yesterday, I must follow up — it’s great to be back online. This music blog has been a lot of work for us and I can’t imagine losing the session – a – day promise this far into the game! We’re building more and more each day, and now that I’m on summer break from teaching, I’ll be able to devote all my attention toward my creative pursuits.

See you next session!

Jeff’s version is no longer on YouTube, but here’s…

“I Shall Be Released” (Bob Dylan Cover)

By Chris Moore:

Thanks for getting your daily dose of acoustic guitar music at https://guitarbucketlist.com today! It only seemed appropriate to start off the work week with a song titled “I Shall Be Released”… This is a cover song originally written by Bob Dylan. Although he never officially released his version on an album, it’s available on the Biograph boxset and on The Essential Bob Dylan. Probably the most polished version is on the Band’s superb 1968 album Music from Big Pink.

I haven’t recorded a Dylan song in a while, so I figured I could sneak yet another one into my list of Laptop Sessions. It was really fun to do and I would have kept my first take if I wasn’t such a perfectionist…

Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for an all-new cover song and free music video from our very own Jeff Copperthite…

See you next session!

“Only Wanna Be With You” (Hootie & the Blowfish Cover, Lyrics, & Chords!)

By Chris Moore:

Welcome to today’s edition of the Laptop Sessions! I am proud to bring you “Only Wanna Be With You,” a song from an artist we haven’t covered yet, although we’ve played it many times in concert- Hootie and the Blowfish, starring Darius Rucker. In our MoU live shows, Mike and I shared the lead, and in our recent “Laptop Sessions Live” concert, Jim and I made it our own. Now, all we need is for Jeff to take a turn…

“Only Wanna Be With You” is a great 90’s tune that I’ve loved for a long time for several reasons. Aside from being catchy and acoustic-based, it includes the line “Ain’t Bobby so cool?…” — meaning, of course, Bob Dylan. The lyrics directly quote “Idiot Wind,” a 1970’s Dylan song that I hope to record soon, AND “Tangled Up in Blue,” another Blood On the Tracks alum that I have already recorded. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun to play! Plus, this song was just begging for an acoustic cover version of it, don’t you think?

I hope you’ll rate and/or comment once you’ve watched tonight’s acoustic cover song music video of “Only Wanna Be With You” by Hootie and the Blowfish, and don’t forget to check back tomorrow for an all-new Original Wednesday installment from Jeff at https://guitarbucketlist.com, where he’ll play a great original song on his trusty acoustic guitar.

See you next session!

CHORDS:
Only Wanna Be With You
Hootie & the Blowfish
Capo 2:

E	Asus2 E Asus2

You and me, we come from different worlds,
You like to laugh at me when I look at other girls.

Sometimes you’re crazy, and you wonder why
I’m such a baby, ‘cause the dolphins make me cry
               B Asus2 E Asus2
Well, there’s nothing I can do; I’ve been looking for a girl like you.
You look at me, you’ve got nothing left to say,
I’ll only pout at you until I get my way.

I won’t dance, you won’t sing,
I just want to love you but you want to wear my ring.

Well there’s nothing I can do… I only wanna be with you.
You can call me your fool… Only wanna be with you.

Put on a little Dylan, sitting on a fence
I say that line is great, you ask me what I meant by

Said I shot a man named Gray, took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks, and when she died it came to me

I cant help it if I’m lucky… Only wanna be with you.
Ain’t Bobby so cool… Only wanna be with you

(Solo)

Yeah I’m tangled up in blue… Only wanna be with you.
You can call me your fool… Only wanna be with you.
Sometimes I wonder if it will ever end

You get so mad at me when I go out with my friends
Sometimes you’re crazy, and you wonder why
I’m such a baby yeah, the dolphins make me cry…

Well there’s nothing I can do… Only wanna be with you.
You can call me your fool… Only wanna be with you.
Yeah I’m tangled up in blue… Only wanna be with you.

“Suzanne” (Leonard Cohen Cover)

By Chris Moore:

Hi all!  I’m coming to you tonight on time for once, well before the midnight mark on my day to record an acoustic cover song music video.  Yes, it’s just after 5:00pm.  Now, you may be wondering, what act of God has caused Chris to post on time for once?

Well, the answer is quite simple.

I’m on my way out with Jim and Becky to follow up on an invitation from his cousin Sarah to have a holiday get-together.  I don’t know what that exactly entails, but I DO know that we will be watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.  That’s just what I need to jump-start this Christmas.  It’s been kind of difficult to get into the spirit of the season for a couple reasons.  Even our perfectly symmetrical (with only a little work from Jim with his hacksaw) Christmas tree hasn’t brought the Christmas spirit into my soul.

So, what better way to fix that problem than to watch one of my favorite yuletide films?

Also, I keep forgetting to grab my Christmas CDs from the shelf, so I haven’t been listening to holiday music.  I can’t wait to break out the Moody Blues, Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, Barenaked Ladies, and America albums.  And, I didn’t mean to at first, but I pretty much listed them in order from my absolute favorites to my favorites.

Okay, I’m rushing this post because we really have to go.  I’m — big surprise — the only thing making us late right now, so it’s time to end this cheesy un-proofread post with a simple final paragraph…

This is my cover song version of Leonard Cohen’s classic sixties acoustic song “Suzanne.”  I’ve been listening to the 30 song PLUS “essential” Leonard Cohen songs the past two weeks, and this is certainly one of my favorites.  This song and the one I recorded a couple sessions ago, “No Way to Say Goodbye,” are so different from his later sound, but there’s plenty more Laptop Sessions left…  I’ll probably cover “Ain’t No Cure for Love” among others in the future.

For now, though, enjoy this early Leonard Cohen song and I’ll see you next session!
