“All The Things” (Byrds Cover)

Happy Friday and happy 4th to everyone! I hope today finds you ready to celebrate and watch some fireworks, eat some hamburgers and hot dogs, and just relax and enjoy the long weekend. I’m happy to see that you have selected guitarbucketlist.com as a place to visit today, and we thank you for that.

And no, I don’t have a cheesy patriotic song to bring you today, but I do have a cool cover song video to show you today. For the second time, I am covering a song by The Byrds called “All The Things” from their untitled album. I kid you not, that’s the name that is known by – (Untitled). It is a collection of live and studio tracks, and this is one of the studio tracks.

I first heard this song on a WCJM radio show called “Song for the New Millenium” which was a countdown style show that this song won. It really is a good tune and I think it has a good message for the holiday today.

Again, enjoy your holiday and come back tomorrow for another session by Jim Fusco. By the way, if you haven’t watched his original song from Wednesday, do so. It really is something else!

“Crazy Life” (Toad the Wet Sprocket Cover)

Welcome to your Saturday night fever edition of The Laptop Sessions!  Today I bring you another return engagement with a band previously featured on the sessions, and it is a great song.

The band is Toad the Wet Sprocket (and again, don’t ask – I’m not too sure where that name came from either), and today I am covering another song from their final album “Coil” (well, I should now say their most recent release) called “Crazy Life”.  It is a simple, yet catchy tune with a great strum pattern.  The lyrics are quite interesting and I still have not fully understood what they mean.  There are a few historical references you’ll hear though.

It is appropriate that I am doing this song today.  I really had a “Crazy Life” kinda day, where I ejected only my 2nd coach in my 2 year umpiring career.  It takes a lot to get to me, and if you go onto my ejection list, you must’ve done something wrong.  Baseball coaches, if you are reading this, do not argue balls and strikes – unless you’re looking for an excuse to go home.

“Don’t Worry” (Goo Goo Dolls Cover)

Welcome to Thumpin’ Thursday!  I hope that you’re enjoying this final full week of August.  At least one of us is.

I’m definitely going to be having some issues letting go of summer.  I have enjoyed it a lot and have made the most of it.  Vacation was great.  This year, as mentioned already last week, will be a busy one for sure!

But you’ve already heard about that.  How about today’s session!

This week I bring you another Goo Goo Dolls song, but it’s a throwback.  It is not the humorous one I mentioned last month when I posted another Goo Goo Dolls song, but it is from an album that came out before they were considered mainstream.  The song is “Don’t Worry” (and no, it has nothing to do with Bobby Ferrin) from their 1991 album “Superstar Car Wash”.  It is the shortest song on the album, and there are about 3 other songs that may make future sessions from this album alone.

When I was in high school and using that BMG membership to the fullest, I used the opportunity to fill out my collection from this band.  I did get to meet them after a concert (but sadly didn’t get any autographs – just shook Robby’s hand), and they remain the only live band i’ve seen more than once in concert.  This particular album was perfect for me to listen to on the weekends when I had to mow the lawn.  In my own weird analytical constantly relating stuff together mind, the length of this album was near the exact amount of time it took to mow the front and back yard.  I’d be hearing the final track, and then turning the mower off and putting it back in the shed.

But this song is another that features Robby Takac.  It’s 3 in a row for me of GGD covers that are songs written by Takac.  I promise the next one will be another Johnny tune.

Next week will be the first post where i’ll have been in school before posting.  Too bad I should’ve done this song in June since one of the lyrics is “smells like summer is on the way”.  Well unfortunately, it’s on the way out.

But as mentioned, lots to look forward too!  We’re charging through 2009 like mad.  Only 3 months until we have to change 2 of the digits in the year! (and thank Dark Ixion for that – no more of those stupid glasses people wear that have the year on them) (ok, perhaps a pirate is good for the next 90 years…).

So enjoy tonight’s session, and I’ll see you next week!

“Dimension Breach” (Chrono Cross OST Piano Cover)

Welcome to the final month of The Laptop Sessions session per day project!  Today I kick it off with a great cover from something most of our fans have never heard of.

Waaaay back in January, I did an acoustic guitar cover of a song from the video game Final Fantasy 8, and the reception was nice from users who have heard it (although I admit, it wasn’t played PERFECTLY).  Well, today I bring you another cover from a song in a video game.  This time, the game is Chrono Cross, a game from 2000.  The game itself is one of the best of all time, so if you’re a role playing game player and have not played it, check it out.

I bring this song to you for 3 reasons.

1) I’ve been playing the Chrono Trigger DS port since I got it on Saturday, and have had both playlists on my Winamp for a few days now.

2) I’ve been meaning to do another instrumental cover from a video game, so this provided me the perfect combination with reason #1.

3) I called in sick to work today because yesterday I had a sore throat, and lo-and-behold, my voice was not up to singing today.  Therefore, an instrumental is just what the doctor ordered.

The song is called “Dimension Breach”.  It is played just after the main character Serge, crosses into the space between dimensions – one of which is his “home”, and another dimension in which he had passed on 10 years ago.  The tune fits the mood of the game at that point in the story.

On Thursday I will be back for the first of 10 videos that I will be recording to close out my portion of session-per-day.  I as well am looking forward to hearing the 10th anniversery show that we here at guitarbucketlist.com recorded along w/ the other 3 cast members of WCJM this past Saturday.  I hope you do too – we laughed a lot as well.
