“Only Happy When it Rains” (Garbage Cover)

You know me – i’m not one to decline a challenge.  When I read Jim’s Thursday post that he was covering a female artist, and echoed by Chris, who followed up Jim’s post with an extremely….scary cover (how appropriate – I don’t think i’ve been put on a holiday yet).

Well, here you go.  Jeff’s covering a band with a female lead singer.

And yes, I admit i’m not as attractive as Shirley Manson.

But nonetheless, I present a song from her band Garbage.  The song is “Only Happy When It Rains”, which was a popular song from their debut self-titled album.  I always did enjoy the songs from this band, and I also enjoyed the fact that Butch Vig was their drummer (and the producer of the quintessential alternative rock album Nevermind by Nirvana).  They had catchy riffs, good vocals, and Shirley is quite impressive in the singing department.

I didn’t have to raise my normal voice pitch all that much, given Shirley’s tendency to sing in the low range.  Because of this, I didn’t need to use falsetto.  I think I did a good job of this.  I threw a capo on the guitar to make playing it a lot easier, since the singing part was going to be somewhat challenging.

This goes to show – we aren’t afraid of the female-lead bands!  Perhaps I’ll throw in a Fleetwood Mac song in the near future…

The next day, Jim entertained us with his Super Sunday edition. I was back to check it out, and i’m sure you were too!

“Sometimes” (An Indie Rock Music Video)

Back for Original Wednesday with another song by fellow FMP member Jim Fusco.

This song comes from his album “What About Today?”, which was the album I picked Harmony from (an earlier laptop sessions video). It is called “Sometimes”, and stands out among my favorite songs by Jim.

I love the chorus – both musically and lyrically. I think if you listen to the lyrics you will be impressed with the deep thought that can be invoked from his lyrics.

You’d think at my 9th video i’d have this video recording thing down, but the microphone levels are a bit high on this video. Therefore, you’re going to hear some popping. I hope, however, that it is just my crummy laptop speakers (Jim may also notice a minor lyric flub near the end).

“Tin Man” (America Cover)

Thank you for coming by to check out today’s edition of The Laptop Sessions! I am pleased to bring another great cover song video to you today. And it’s a band we have happily covered before (this is my 3rd personally).

Going back to another America song, and another Dewey Bunnell written song, I bring you “Tin Man” from their album “Holiday”. This song was extremely popular (though not quite as much as “A Horse With No Name”) and it helped the album reach gold status. I love the catchy guitar riff and the simple, yet effective vocals to the song.

My fingers are in such pain after doing this song. The main progression is Gmaj7 and Cmaj7, and I decided I wanted to use the exact chord fingerings that Dewey uses. I’m happy it came out well, but i’m sure you’ll notice me having fun with the Gmaj7 chord. That particular fingering can give me some problems, but in this take I did a pretty good job with it.

I hope you enjoyed this session — the next day’s post brought another original song from the one, the only, Jim Fusco! (EDIT: Sorry, was quite sleepy yesterday)

“If You Never Got Sick” (The Wallflowers Cover)

Chris, Jim, and I are part of an internet radio station called WCJM.com Free Internet Radio, and one of the shows that we did (but currently can’t find) was called the “Get Well Mike” show, because at the time Jim’s brother Mike was sick and we wanted to lift his spirits (this is before the “Ronco automatic face lifter” came into existence) (Note: the preceding joke would only be fully understood by 6 people on this planet – 2 of them write on this blog as well).

Well, the first song on the show was this one, and thus my introduction to this song.

It is a personal favorite of mine, and has helped make the Wallflowers one of my favorite bands. I figured because of this that this song would be the perfect introduction for me into FMP’s “Laptop Sessions” as well.

I think I do the song justice. I had the lyrics on the laptop just in case, but I didn’t need ’em.

This also marks my introduction into video making and on to youtube as well, so if you like it (or hate it), let me know!
