“The Man Who Sold The World” (David Bowie Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

That’s right, ladies and gentlemen.  It’s that time…that’s right…Thumpin’ Thursday!  Who doesn’t enjoy a great dose of their Laptop Sessions on the second best day of the week – and it’s right after the best day of the week!

This next song is sort of by request – Jim mentioned it in recent correspondence that this song was covered by Nirvana, and we have not done either Nirvana, or the guy who wrote the song David Bowie.

What better day than Thumpin’ Thursday to fix both of those things in one session?

Therefore, here comes Jeff Copperthite with the “cover of a cover” version of David Bowie’s classic “The Man Who Sold The World” from his album of the same name.  The cover version was featured on the widely played Nirvana edition of the show “MTV Unplugged”.  I thoroughly enjoyed that series when it was on the air, and some of my favorite bands were lucky enough to be featured on that show while it lasted.

I recorded this in the same session as my previous U2 video, and again, I look tired.  I feel a lot better today than how I look in this video.  I couldn’t get a solid take where I played the riff cleanly, and eventually cut out some parts with the riff.  I also came in just a bit too early on one part.  Nobody has pointed it out in my recent video (what I did wrong), but I am very pleased on the positive feedback I have gotten from that video.

But now, you get to enjoy this version on a great Thursday.  I hope you enjoy it, and return for Jim’s fantastic Friday edition tomorrow!

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, Jeff’s acoustic cover song music videos are no longer on YouTube, but we decided to keep his cover song blog posts up.  We figured these music blog entries would be good for posterity’s sake and because Jeff always gave such insightful posts each Session.  We hope to see Jeff’s impressive catalog of acoustic rock songs here on the Laptop Sessions cover songs and origianal music blog again in the future.  But, for now, please make sure to check-out hundreds of other acoustic cover songs from all of your favorite bands here on the Laptop Sessions music blog!

“The Freshmen” (Verve Pipe Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

It’s that time again – thumpin’ Thursday! Today I introduce another band to the sessions. It’s the Verve Pipe with their hit song “The Freshmen” from their album “Villains”.

This album is one of my personal favorites, as it was among the albums I listened to before a cross country meet in high school. I would listen to this album front to back. “Cattle” is my favorite song off this album. The song I bring you today probably ranks 4th or 5th on the album for me. Still, it is among my favorites.

I hope you are continuing to enjoy the Laptop Sessions daily. Every day a new video, and every day a new milestone. I have crossed 25k views, and at some point yesterday the video for “Horse With No Name” became my first video to eclipse 2k views.

Tomorrow, Jim will be back with another hit. See ya then!

“Yesterday” (Beatles Cover)

By Jeff:

Let us continue our Beatles cover songs streak!

Oddly enough, I read an article today that The Beatles are breaking records (again) from album sales in the past couple of weeks.  So why not continue to post about possibly the best group ever.

So here’s a great classic song from their 1965 album “Help!” called “Yesterday”.  It’s a great ballad about a surprise departure.  Kind of odd that my song from last week was about a surprise arrival.

This song was recorded late at night.  Forgive the brevity of this post.  I’m busy as anything.

And it’s almost the end of September.  Already.

And why aren’t you following me on Twitter 😀  I’ll update more than twice a month of I get more than two followers.  Oh, and that doesn’t include the stupid auto-followers who include their virus loaded web sites on their profile page.  Stay away if you’re one of them.

So enjoy this song and i’ll see you next week for another great video!  Come back Monday for the next installment from the latest Fab x (that x is for how many people Jim will be playing with – substitute at will!)

“Lightning Crashes” (Live Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

Good evening and I hope this past Tuesday has found you well.  Tonight I add another new band to the category page here on our awesome site.

“Live” is our focus this evening, and one of their hit songs “Lightning Crashes” is the video tonight.  I had attempted to record this video last Friday, but my voice was shot from the previous video I had recorded (which some person on Youtube rated 1 star – to my bewilderment).  Therefore, here’s what I was able to get out of me this evening.

The song is off the album “Throwing Copper”, which I happily own.  I do own albums 2 through 5 from this band, and the album tonight’s song is from was the first one I bought.  I remember burning a copy for my car, and writing on the blank CD the letters “Cu” with some trail marks behind it.

…I’ll give some of you a second or two on that one…

This isn’t my best, or worst performance.  I’ve had a tough month, so I apologize if it isn’t my best.  However, it works and it goes to show that I continue to have a penchant for recording 5 minute songs (tends to get frustrating doing retakes for long songs like this).

Tomorrow Jim will show us what he’s got in his library!  I can’t wait!
