“Don’t Worry” (Goo Goo Dolls Cover)

By Jeff:

Welcome to Thumpin’ Thursday!  I hope that you’re enjoying this final full week of August.  At least one of us is.

I’m definitely going to be having some issues letting go of summer.  I have enjoyed it a lot and have made the most of it.  Vacation was great.  This year, as mentioned already last week, will be a busy one for sure!

But you’ve already heard about that.  How about today’s session!

This week I bring you another Goo Goo Dolls song, but it’s a throwback.  It is not the humorous one I mentioned last month when I posted another Goo Goo Dolls song, but it is from an album that came out before they were considered mainstream.  The song is “Don’t Worry” (and no, it has nothing to do with Bobby Ferrin) from their 1991 album “Superstar Car Wash”.  It is the shortest song on the album, and there are about 3 other songs that may make future sessions from this album alone.

When I was in high school and using that BMG membership to the fullest, I used the opportunity to fill out my collection from this band.  I did get to meet them after a concert (but sadly didn’t get any autographs – just shook Robby’s hand), and they remain the only live band i’ve seen more than once in concert.  This particular album was perfect for me to listen to on the weekends when I had to mow the lawn.  In my own weird analytical constantly relating stuff together mind, the length of this album was near the exact amount of time it took to mow the front and back yard.  I’d be hearing the final track, and then turning the mower off and putting it back in the shed.

But this song is another that features Robby Takac.  It’s 3 in a row for me of GGD covers that are songs written by Takac.  I promise the next one will be another Johnny tune.

Next week will be the first post where i’ll have been in school before posting.  Too bad I should’ve done this song in June since one of the lyrics is “smells like summer is on the way”.  Well unfortunately, it’s on the way out.

But as mentioned, lots to look forward too!  We’re charging through 2009 like mad.  Only 3 months until we have to change 2 of the digits in the year! (and thank Dark Ixion for that – no more of those stupid glasses people wear that have the year on them) (ok, perhaps a pirate is good for the next 90 years…).

So enjoy tonight’s session, and I’ll see you next week!

Oh, and I promise more regular Twitter updates.  But start following!

DO IT!

Editor’s Note: Unfortunately, Jeff’s acoustic cover song music videos are no longer on YouTube, but we decided to keep his cover song blog posts up.  We figured these music blog entries would be good for posterity’s sake and because Jeff always gave such insightful posts each Session.  We hope to see Jeff’s impressive catalog of acoustic rock songs here on the Laptop Sessions cover songs and original music blog again in the future.  But, for now, please make sure to check-out hundreds of other acoustic cover songs from all of your favorite bands here on the Laptop Sessions music blog!

By Chris Moore:

Hello and welcome to another all-new week of great material at the Laptop Sessions acoustic cover song music video blog!  Before I address my session for tonight, I should begin by announcing that this will be a jam-packed week of sessions, reviews, and other posts.  There’s Monday and Tuesday accounted for as you can always depend on, and rest assured that there is a Guest Session lined up for Friday.  In addition, I have some bonus chords coming your way, as well as a bonus Weekend Review post before the week is out.  All this when I’m beginning one of the busiest weeks of my life!

First of all, let’s get down to the session at hand.  For today, I’ve recorded “All of the Time” from the band Locksley’s second release, Don’t Make Me Wait.  This is one of those rare — but very exciting — CDs I came across quite randomly in the used CD rack at Newbury Comics.  I can’t really explain what possessed me to buy the album, but I was thrilled by what I heard.  Now, before you get your hopes too high, I should admit that their sound is some kind of cross between garage rock and early Beatles.  It’s a bit derivative, but I have a very good feeling about this group of guys, and I feel like they are going to evolve and come out with an album that is all their own in the future.

Hopefully, that “future” will be this March when they release their next album!

Funny enough, the band that gave us Don’t Make Me Wait and the accompanying title track has also, just as of last week, delayed the release of their new album, Be in Love, by nearly a month and a half.  Apparently, an opportunity to engage in a higher-profile marketing campaign arose recently that they couldn’t pass up.  The only problem was that they needed to hold off on the release to complete the necessary preparations.

Of course, I had decided to record this song today based on the Be in Love release date of tomorrow, January 26th, 2010.

Still, this will give me some more time to enjoy this album and wonder what the new one will be like.  I suppose that could be a good or a bad decision, as expectations often have a way of killing the real experience…

To return to the present, my version of “All of the Time” is based on the 2008 reissue version of the aforementioned album.  I was really pleased with the way this song translated to an entirely acoustic live Laptop Sessions performance, complete with my first recorded use of my “G” harmonica.  Unfortunately, I screwed up lyrically; it’s just one word that I missed, but it doesn’t make as much sense the way I sang it.  The most frustrating part is that I was singing it correctly before I hit record!

I think…

Regardless, this was my best take, and I hope you enjoy it.  I know I enjoyed learning and playing it, especially since it was one of my rare two-takes-and-I’m-done Laptop Sessions experiences.  That’s why it truly does help to practice days in advance and sing along in the car a ridiculous number of times!  But, as much fun as it’s been learning and recording the song, posting my Locksley-themed Weekend Review, and writing this post, I’m off to get some work done now so I can sleep well before continuing a week of grading exams and papers, closing out the semester by Thursday, closing in another sense on Wednesday, and moving five minutes closer to work on Saturday.

See you next session!

This session pretty much speaks for itself.

“Yes” (Coldplay Cover)

By Jeff Copperthite:

Welcome to your Thumpin’ Thursday installment of The Laptop Sessions (and almost fantastic Friday as well)!

I hope all is well on your end, and that you are celebrating with your family and friends one of the two major religious holidays that are going on at this point in time.  I myself have been to two Seders in the past two nights, and i’m done until next year with those.

Tonight I have a great cover song, and to boot, it’s a 2 parter!

The song is “Yes” by Coldplay, and yes it’s another song from their incredibly popular album “Viva La Vida”.  I was so excited that when I picked this album up last year, I didn’t even look at the track list.  I put it in my CD player and heard each song on the album before I even knew the name of it.  This song and the 2nd one that I will cover next week were my favorite.  I just liked how it tied together and it’s gentle and “pleading” beat (I couldn’t think of another word to describe it).

I find myself enjoying Coldplay’s library more and more.  They do a great job putting music together.

Speaking of people who do a good job putting music together, have you picked up Jim Fusco’s new album Halfway There yet?  I’ve only heard previews of some of the songs, and if that is any kind of indication as to the quality of this album, you best hear it and purchase it yourself.  I also am looking forward to hearing his remastered version of “What About Today?”, which is an awesome album as well.  Jim’s music always pleases.

In the meantime, enjoy this song!  See you next week!
