“You Can’t Count On Me” (A Counting Crows Cover)

Hello and welcome to another all-new Laptop Session! Today’s selection is “You Can’t Count On Me,” from the Counting Crows’ new album, Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings. This record is a concept album of sorts, as Adam Duritz sings his way from a raucous Saturday night out on the town to a Sunday morning of realizations. I’ve been really excited about recording a tune from this album — there’s been a lot of good new music this year so far, but this has been one of my favorite albums. To be honest, I didn’t know much about Duritz and company, but I have a lot of respect for him as a songwriter and a performer after listening repeatedly to the album.

“Tin Man” (America Cover)

Thank you for coming by to check out today’s edition of The Laptop Sessions! I am pleased to bring another great cover song video to you today. And it’s a band we have happily covered before (this is my 3rd personally).

Going back to another America song, and another Dewey Bunnell written song, I bring you “Tin Man” from their album “Holiday”. This song was extremely popular (though not quite as much as “A Horse With No Name”) and it helped the album reach gold status. I love the catchy guitar riff and the simple, yet effective vocals to the song.

My fingers are in such pain after doing this song. The main progression is Gmaj7 and Cmaj7, and I decided I wanted to use the exact chord fingerings that Dewey uses. I’m happy it came out well, but i’m sure you’ll notice me having fun with the Gmaj7 chord. That particular fingering can give me some problems, but in this take I did a pretty good job with it.

“Closer To Free” (The BoDeans Cover)

Welcome to the 2nd part of a double dose with me!  Here’s your new band entry for tonight – think of this as your delayed “Thumpin’ Thursday” – as this was the tune I was looking to have this tune for this past Thursday.

Today’s song is a popular one called “Closer To Free”.  I used to confuse this tune with the theme from Friends for some reason, although those two songs are quite different.  After I wrote that sentence, I realized that it WAS a theme to another show called “Party of Five”.  It’s very upbeat with a standard and easy chord progression.  It’s also easily recognizable and great to play at gatherings.

I recorded this in the same session as yesterday’s tune, so again the same voice problem is still lingering a bit.  Another “caution” title screen was added, but hopefully for Wednesday I won’t have to add one.

“The Envoy” (Warren Zevon Cover)

I expect that most people haven’t heard of this song from one of my favorite songwriters, Warren Zevon. “The Envoy” is the title track from his poorly-received 1982 album that led to his record label dropping him. Supposedly, he found out that he had been dropped by reading the article in a magazine. This, of course, led to a period of drinking and self destruction.

But I really love this album! Perhaps it’s because this is one of those albums that I feel very personally about, as though I’m one of the few to ever really appreciate it. The songs may not be his best, but there are certainly some fun ones, like “The Hula Hula Boys” and “Let Nothing Come Between You.”

Without further ado, here’s my acoustic cover song version of “The Envoy,” a song that is sadly still relevant, over twenty-five years later…
